| [We ran this experiment a few weeks ago and got 96 people to respond! I wanted to leave it a while and send it out again just because I felt it was worth breaking the barrier and getting over a hundred responses. Please take a minute to do the test if you haven't already. The final results will only be sent to out to people who have taken part.] Quick Internet Hypnosis Experiment (Important. Please only do this test if you are in good mental health. Do NOT participate if you suffer from clinical depression, psychosis (e.g., schizophrenia), or panic attacks.) >From time to time I like to do simple informal hypnosis or autosuggestion studies, using the internet to gather responses. This isn't intended as a formal scientific experiment, though the results may provide suggestions for future research. QUICK IMR TEST Description. This is a quick informal test to see if we can determine typical response patterns to suggestions of muscle movements (called "IMRs"). Responses will be treated with anonymity; I'm only interested in calculating the averages. Incentive. Assuming we get enough participants, the findings and conclusions will be emailed to those who have participated. In other words, if you want to find out what happens, at this stage, you will need to participate yourself. (That's just to encourage more people to submit responses.) Instructions. Follow the steps below carefully. Provide your answers to the questions which follow. Do NOT email your responses to this group. Please be careful to send them only to the address below (otherwise other people will see your results which may bias their own repsonses). Send any questions to the same email address. Email responses to: HypnoSynthesisUK@aol.com 1) Place both your hands on your lap, or on a desk, palms facing down. Position your hands so they are almost touching. Make yourself comfortable. 2) Stare at the tips of your index fingers. Focus on the idea of both index fingers growing lighter and lifting. Use your imagination and tell yourself that your fingers both want to rise. 3) Note which finger moves first and which lifts the highest. I mean, I think if you are actually trying to hypnotize someone it might make sense to *assume* that one finger or the other will definitely move, but if you are trying to collect uncontaminated information, I'm not so sure that your wording is so good. However, I admit that I am new at this, so please bear with me as you .... carry on. Venus |
